7 Golden Rules of Goal Setting to Succeed and Prosper

PEANUTS on X: "Goodbye, summer 2017 https://t.co/TCXpIeJhKM" / X

The end of summer is upon us. Back at work; are you feeling full of energy and enthusiasm or do you find yourself pondering…

“Another month has passed and I haven’t launched my businesses that I’ve been dreaming of starting for years now?”

“Or, why after years of dedication, am I still waiting on that promotion”? - Making your hard work seem in vain.

“Why, even after all this time, does that fitness class you've been eyeing remain just a wish, and the motivation to start—and persist—still seem absent in me?”

Trust me, I’ve been there, I’ve walked in your shoes. It’s disheartening

However, it doesn't need to be this way. Your dreams are still within reach and you can make them come true.  But to grasp them, you must set clear goals. Without clear, defined goals, you'll drift aimlessly, losing concentration and direction. Setting goals not only allows you to take charge of your life but also gives you a benchmark to assess your progress.

It’s important to know that setting goals is a commitment requiring effort, dedication, and strategy. It's not enough to simply declare, "I want it" and expect it to happen. No, you must carefully consider what you want to achieve. Understand that the journey from ideation to realization follows specific stages that hold true for almost every goal. Mastering these stages ensures your goals are achievable and actionable.

If you wish to set specific goals, here are seven key principles to guide you in establishing effective goals and subsequently achieving them:

  • Set inspiring goals with purpose and value

When setting goals for yourself, it's crucial that they inspire and resonate deeply with you. Your goals must connect to your core motivations and driving forces. Next, You must stay dedicated to these goals, they should align with your life's highest priorities. Before embarking on the journey, ask yourself why a particular goal is so important to you. This reflection will instill a genuine interest in your goals completion. To improve your chances of success, approach your goals with an unwavering "I will do this" mindset, with an emphasis on both commitment and urgency.

  • Setting the right goals is a MUST

When you align your goals with your core values, personality, and vision, the journey towards achieving them can feel just as fulfilling as the accomplishment itself. But if you find yourself in a mismatched job or chasing objectives that don't resonate with you, even significant achievements can lead you to feel completely empty inside.

Thus, it's imperative to set goals that genuinely represent your authentic self. Neglecting this can make you feel a sense of discontent, depriving you of the opportunity to fulfill your unique purpose and make your intended contribution to the world.

  • Set clear and achievable goals
  • Your goals should be simple, clear and straightforward. Avoid setting vague or generalized goals, as they don't have adequate guidance. Be precise when setting your goals! You can do that by incorporating specific numbers, dates, and other measurable details. This allows you to track your progress effectively. For more efficiency, break down your primary goals into smaller, actionable steps that you can tackle daily. Often, it's these consistent, daily “baby” steps that help you stay on course and maintain momentum.

Remember, goals are there to guide you. Thus, make them as simple as you can by clearly defining your desired outcome and your intended path. Adding a deadline adds urgency and potency to your goals. And make sure your goals are specific, attainable, and framed positively.

  • Patience is Golden.
  •

Many individuals tend to underestimate the time and effort required to achieve their goals. This actually is one of the key reasons for not achieving them. When their initial expectations don't align with reality, they often end up beating themselves, attributing their shortcomings to a lack of talent or blaming external circumstances when they fall short—which is inevitable at some point. Because of such disappointments, they often give up as a result. Instead of giving up and succumbing to discouragement, it's essential to remain flexible, adjust your objectives or timelines as necessary and keep moving forward.

I must admit, on my journey, I've contemplated quitting on numerous occasions. In those moments, I found it vital to exercise patience with myself and my goals and stay motivated and committed to my journey.

    • Failure doesn’t exist

Failure is just a matter of perspective. Events in our lives only become "failures" when we label them as such. If you feel like a failure, it means you’ve probably internalized and identified yourself with these perceived setbacks. This is not a good idea and you're venturing into a detrimental mindset. In reality, failure as a concept is elusive. Even if it were tangible, it wouldn't define your entirety. The notion of failure is a mental construct, shaped entirely by how we choose to interpret events in our lives.

  • Notice how You self-sabotage.
  • We set goals on a conscious level, but sometimes, they are at odds with the deeply ingrained beliefs, motivations, and fears that we have in our subconscious, and because of that we end up sabotaging our ability to reach our goals. Neuroscientists tell us that while our conscious mind processes about 7 bits of information per second, the subconscious churns through a staggering 11 million bits in the same time frame. Given this disparity, it's evident that our subconscious beliefs and fears often overshadow the conscious ones.

  • Say “NO” to distractions
  • Staying focused is paramount when it comes to achieving your goals. While it's essential to maintain a sharp focus, you’ll learn that true focus often means actively rejecting any form of distractions. As time passes, you’ll get much better at saying “no” to distractions, as well as swiftly recognizing them as they creep up. Moreover, you’ll get better at figuring out those things that will have the greatest impact on our overall success and using those very important things to maintain focus.

    Conclusion
